Painting clay pots is a fun project my husband and I shared when we were first married. However, our daughter enjoyed getting in on the fun too, so this makes a great kid craft.

One of the easiest and fun ways to entertain children and bond with them at the same time is to share painting crafts. All art is a subjective, determined by the individual taste and art preference of the beholder, so it doesn't matter what design your child chooses.
Children seem to have a natural enjoyment of art, especially painting, so the idea of clay pot painting is an exciting activity for most children. Their finished project can be turned into a beautiful gift that will hold real or faux flowers. This is also a great way to make birthday or Christmas presents.
Painting Clay Pots Instruction:
Prepare a safe place to paint with a plastic tablecloth that can be easily cleaned after use. Also protect your children's clothing with smocks or aprons if you're not using washable paint.
1. Clay pots can be purchased in many different sizes, from tiny ones not more than 2 inches in diameter, to huge ones over a foot across. For a beginning project, start with smaller pots. Make sure that the pots used are new or clean.
2.
Before painting, clean the surface with a clean cloth soaked
in paint thinner.
3. Have ready a variety of inexpensive paint brushes,
depending upon the size of your child's pot.
4. Purchase Crayola or other similar brand paint colors in jars or use acrylic from tubes. For children I washable paints.
5. Have ready one or two cups of water to rinse their brushes.
Make sure your child or children feel comfortable while painting. Give them guidance, but also let this be a lesson in creativity. When they have finished painting their clay pots, set them aside to dry.
Decorations:
Embellishments can also be used such as glitter paint, sequins. ribbon, lace and more. Glue onto the project after painting clay pots.
Paint Spatter:
Another idea is to spatter the pot before using by using a spatter brush. This will create a light layer of dots over the surface of the clay pot.
Simply apply a light layer of paint to the brush evenly. Slowly turn the pot while you slip your thumb from the top of the bristles to bottom to spatter the paint over the surface of the pot. Repeat until the total surface has been covered. Let paint dry before painting designs.
Painting Clay Pots is especially fun when done outdoors if
possible. However, the kitchen or a playrool works just as
well. To paint pots a solid color before painting a design,
