Collage Watch Pin With A Vintage Flair
My collage
watch pin has been one of my best sellers. Use my example to
make your own with personal touches.

Putting
The Pieces Together
I
found these
charms at my local craft store and used them with old watch parts for
a vintage look. There are no specific pieces to
purchase. You might already have what you need in your jewelry box.
You can also find interesting parts from an old watch. Some craft stores sell watch pieces already dissected from the
watch. I like to peruse antique stores and find old jewelry
to use for pins, decorations and earrings.

Watch Pin Preparation:
- On
a piece of paper, make a drawing of your proposed design or use the one
above for a guide. Then get all of your pieces together and
prepare them.
- Cut
any metal pieces into the shapes or sizes that you want. For
instance, I use a rose metal piece that includes the stem,
roses, rose buds and leaves. I cut off the pieces I want to
use and then save the rest for another pin.
- I
then paint over each piece with a flat sable brush and the color I want
and then use a clean cloth to rub off most of it. This leaves only a
little color over the charm and most of the color within the cracks or
crevices for an antique look.
You can do this to the complete
piece before you cut it, but you might cut-off some of the color.
It's up to you how to do this. Also I use burnt
umber to antique the filigree. Black can be used for a
darker look.
- Spray
all metals pieces with a matte craft varnish. I purchase mine
from the spray paint section at my local Walmart. Spray and
let dry in a well ventilated room or outdoors in a place where they
can't be blown away or damaged.

Watch Pin Assembly:
- Next,
begin
building your pin by layering each piece upon another, gluing as you
go. You will need to use a well ventilated room. Keep
children and pets away from your workspace. Let dry
completely in your garage in a place where you will not smell the glue.
- While
the
pieces are drying, assemble your beads onto the headpins.
Simply thread each bead in the order shown or in your own
desired order. Then bend the end of the wire into a closed
semi-circle. This is easy with the pliers because all you do
is wrap the end of the headpin around the head of the pliers and you
will easily make the loop. Pinch the bottom of the loop a
little if it is not completely closed.
- Attach
a jump
ring to each of the loops that you made. Use your pliers to open the
ring slightly and insert into the facepin loop.
- Use
the
pliers to attach each headpin onto the ends of the filigree,
spacing them as shown. Pinch each end of the jump-ring to
hold
the headpin in place and to create the dangling movement.
- When
your collage watch pin
is complete, glue on a pin back and let dry.

Matching Earrings:
Use the
headpins to make each dangle and then attach to the earring posts the
same as for the pin.
What is a
headpin and a jumpring?
HEADPIN:
A
metal wire, strong enough to hold beads. They can have a ring
at the bottom or a decoration to keep the beads fitted over the "stem."
A loop must be made with jewelry pliers to hook the headpin
to a project.
Jump-rings: A
tiny circular ring that is joined together for attaching to jewelry.
Use the jewelry pliers to gently open and close, and to hook
onto a project.
These pins
make great decoration pieces for packages and gift baskets. Go here to make your own gift
baskets.
Painted
Jewelry Cards
 |
|
Make hand painted cards to display your vintage
look jewelry like the one at left. It's fun and easy to do.
Anyone can do it!
Make them in an assembly line process while you have all of your
supplies handy. I found this made my jewelry sell faster
because of the attractive packaging. People love giving
unique gifts and these beautiful cards complete the picture. |
