Christmas Party Cut-Out
Basket by Margaret
Lukasik
The wreaths
seen below can be changed into thousands of designs. Items
from your kitchen
can be used. The Holly leaves can
be cut with small sewing
scissors or a paring knife. They can also be shaped by hand.
This project can also be made into a wall
hanging by hanging the basket off of a hook. It can also be
a stockingholder (place
stocking within the center of the basket, or a candle
holder (for decorative purposes only). Candle should not be
lit.
You
can make the basket in whatever size you
desire. However, if the diameter is going to be more than 5,"
bake 10 to 15 minutes longer than the time shown :)
Quick,
Last Minute Project!
"If
you need a unique idea for decorating
your
Christmas eve party for
kids, this is a great idea! And it only costs about 50 cents for each
one. Use them to hold
candy or special gifts.
Although the style is
Country / Victorian, the basket can be made to reflect your decorating
style.
This is also a great idea for Sunday school Christmas
presents to hold candy, little trinkets and more after the Christmas
program. You can also make them for birthdays, showers and
more by changing the theme."
Any animal cutter about 2" to 3" tall for sides of
basket.
Circle cutter about 2 1/2" to 3" in circumference
(for bottom of basket)
balloon
1 yard red 1/8" ribbon or size desired
Quick drying glue
Christmas Salt Dough Basket:
Cut out a circle shape
from rolled uncolored dough 1/16" thick for the bottom of the basket.
Let air-dry.
Use the same dough to cut
out the 6 shapes with the animal cutters.
If the animal or shape is wide, you may need less shapes, but
you will
have to use an even number for both sides as they will be the sides of
the basket.
Fuse each together with the
sides touching (see photo above with bear arms and legs fused together)
around the circle cutter that you used to cut out the bottom of the
basket. Do not fuse them to the cut-out dough shape that was
set aside to air-dry. The cutter will serve as a mold for the
shapes to harden in the correct position to make the basket.
Let air-dry for 24 hours.
Carefully remove the
cut-outs from the cutter.
Blow up the balloon to fit inside the basket. Place
inside the basket sides with the lip at the bottom end. Make
it big enough for the handle to be the size desired.
Shape nine leaves or more
if needed (or any
shape) the size shown or cut them with a leaf pattern cutter.
Each leaf must be a consistent length (pattern size) and
thickness of about 1/16."
Fuse each leaf to the
other, overlapping slightly from one end of the outer basket to the
other. Allow them to rest over the balloon to form the shape.
Let air-dry 24 hours.
Pop the balloon with a pin
and remove. Let the bottom of the handle and the inside of
the basket completely air-dry if still soft or tacky.
Reinforce the handle with glue and any pieces.
Fit the bottom of the
basket in place and glue to the basket sides.
Your salt
dough basket is complete unless you wish to decorate it with glitter or
paint. Faces can be painted as well.
