What you are going to need is a 4-compartment bank to save, give, invest and spend.  This is all a part of the 10/10/10/70 principle or concept to help your child with money management for the rest of his or her life.  It will also impact their ability for financial success and wealth as an adult.  

However, most important it gives children a moral compass about money by teaching them how to give or share 10% of what they receive or earn.  This is a lesson that will stick with them for the rest of their lives, and it is especially helpful if they attend a Christian church.  The 10% giving can represent tithing and the 10% investing can represent giving offerings.  

This is an easy system to use, and it will even work for adults.  The idea is to make your child's saving, giving and investing fun with the reward of 70% spending!  

Always keep your child encouraged by making sure that all monies get divided as soon as possible and put into the bank.  If you don't keep up with your child's desire to save money, they will probably lose interest as well.  For very small children you can use one of the Mudpie 3-compartment banks.  See below for details.  

• 70% SPENDING:  This money can be used to purchase whatever the child wants with the wisdom given by parents. Good spending habits will be learned.

• 10% SAVINGS:  Save this money.  When it overfills the bank, move the money to a regular piggy bank or decide with your child whether to put it into an  interest bearing savings account. 

• 10% TITHING OR GIVING:  Take this out on Sundays to give at church or give to a charitable organization. 

• OFFERINGS OR INVESTING:  Also called, investing in the Gospel for giving offerings. This money can also be used for investing. The parent and child can discuss how this will be done. Another great lessons learned here.
